Grace Jones lamp

My submission for @terraformstudio’s 2024 Autumn Clay Maker’s Challenge 🍂 “Feminine Energy” 💃✨ This theme was particularly challenging for me. The concept of femininity is not something I relate to easily, so I wanted to bring some gender fuckery into the mix in order to make the piece feel authentic to me; I briefly considered doing something with drag elements but nothing was really hitting. It became an introspection on what femininity actually means to me, and the first person that popped into my head was Grace Jones. What an absolute masterpiece of a human being. Truly an icon. Her gender expression is so vibrant and beautiful but she is 100% WO-MAN, baby! That “feminine energy” just explodes out of her. Simply radiant💃💡 I’m a huge fan of contrasts and how they can serve to elevate everything. The 80s disco angularity of her poses and her flawless skin served as inspirations for the form. The text on the back is pulled from a church board in New Orleans because I think part of feminine energy for me is a sense of divinity and worship. Women should probably be revered more, haha. I decided to make a lamp to help bluntly (hopefully comedically) get the “energy” idea across 😅😛💡she really lights up a room! I’m really proud of the work and hope you like it too 🖤🤍 can’t wait to see what everyone else has made!! Tech specs: Keane white raku body, Chrysanthos black and white underglazes, sgraffito detailing on the back of the jacket. NPS satin white brush on stoneware glaze collar and Terraform studio’s in house mirror black dip glaze for the skin. I also used Chrysanthos colour mask and wax resist for getting those sharp contrast lines in. Cone 10 oxidation firing. The hardware is from Light and Crafty and the globe is from The Lighting Outlet.
