on display right now in the Terraform Studio gallery!
A commission jar made to hold pens and brushes. Alexander is fierce, jovial, and enjoys a firm smack from behind from time to time. His warriors acumen is second to none, tempered in the fires of battle... And the lava outside Volcano Manor... and now kilnfire!!
I chose to work with a Keane ironstone pinchpot body for the strength, but also the colour of the raw fired clay matches Alexander very well. The texturing was achieved with tiny coils and a slip + sgraffito method for the swirls. The arms were a challenge! Alexander had arms and legs of an indeterminate material embedded with chunks of pottery. To achieve this effect I painted some slip onto a sheet of plastic and dried it carefully with a heat gun to create flakes, which I then pressed into his coil appendages before posing. For glazing I used Ketchup inside for a suggestion of the red wax lid that Alexander has, but also a nod to the warrior viscera that he collects inside. I covered the outside with a tenmoku style glaze completely, before wiping back from most of the body, letting it pool in his cracks and battle-damage scars, leaving the arms and legs untouched as they appear much darker than his body in the game. In hindsight, I do wish I had wiped back the arms and legs just a little to show off that texture I worked so hard on. Both glazes are from The Wheelhouse Studio
Chuffed with how this one turned out!
