Seath Bermingham (he/they)

Good Eebenning :)

Hey thanks for checking out my funkly little slice of the world wide webbiverse. My name is Seath and I am a ceramic-artist-in-training and general silly billy from Western Australia. I wanted to create a space where my work could be viewed by folks without social media accounts, like my mum :)

My style is dynamic, unique, and a little bit silly. I draw a lot of inspiration from my queer peers and my goal is to bring the beauty and wonder of the earth and stars into your hands πŸ™Œ I'm passionate about learning and growing as an artist so my work is constantly evolving! my main focus is on creating one-of-a-kind functional ceramics, tailor made for individual needs and aesthetics.

If you like what you see and would like to commission some work from me, feel free to give me a buzz on any of the links above. Thanks :)

some things I like at the moment

Let's Make a Mug Too!

I searched "is there a pottery anime?" turns out? Yes! I'm not very far into it but I'm enjoying it so far. It has these live-action mini-sodes after each episode where 4 of the voice actors visit Gifu prefecture's Tajimi city, look at the locations that served as inspiration for the show, and try their hand at pottery and ceramics. It's really cute and fun. One of the episodes (I think ep3?) has the main character in the process of making pottery for someone else as a gift, and I feel like it perfectly captures that emotional arc that you go through. When you're making for yourself it's fine you know, relaxing. But also kind of aimless and wandering. When you're making for someone else it's like RIGHT! Roll up your sleeves and get to it. It's all you think about until it's done. Constantly bubbling away in the back of your mind. It even captures the relief and melancholy you get when it's all over. Fantastic little show.

Tao Te Ching

I've also been reading the Tao Te Ching (daodejing) by Lao Tzu (laosuh) and making it everyone's problem. It's the sort of thing that you can apply to anything, so naturally I've been finding a lot of things in there that I relate to pottery. But to be fair, some of it literally references pottery, so. Vindication! This is a good passage from it that I like:

11
NON-BEING

Thirty Spokes joined in a hub
Form a Wheel.
The Emptiness between,
The Non-Being,
Makes the Carriage Useful.
Clay kneaded
Forms a Pot.
The Emptiness within,
The Non-Being,
Makes the Pot Useful.
Windows and doors chiseled
Create a House;
The Emptiness within,
The Non-Being,
Makes the House Useful.
Being and Substance
Bring Benefit.
Non-Being and Emptiness
Make things Useful.

I dunno I just like the idea of focusing on a things purpose. I'm super into functional pottery. Also I feel this idea of focusing on the negative space helps with figure drawings and still-life too. It feels really deep to say, "Have you tried drawing what isn't there?"
